Voting Machines Before 2006
Prior to 2006, Voting systems in North Carolina included punch cards, optical scanners , lever machines,
hand counted paper ballots and also direct record electronic (DRE) voting machines.
DREs include touchscreen and also the "dial a vote" type machine.
Currently, there are no touchscreen voting machines certified in North Carolina that produce
a voter verified paper trail. The last official count in North Carolina was in March, and totaled 7,363 DREs.
All electronic voting machines in our state have "secret" (proprietary) source code that may not
be examined by our election officials.
